Just south of Askrigg lies Semer Water, Yorkshire's only natural lake. According to legend, a town once stood where the water now runs deep, but it was doomed to a watery grave after a weary traveler was refused shelter from a raging storm. As he left, he cursed the town, decreeing that it should be drowned under rushing waters. Little wonder that such ancient folklore and glorious scenery inspires so many who live and work in this beautiful region of Britain.
