About
two miles drive from Helmsley, in a beautifully secluded and wooded valley,
stand the ruins of the Cistercian monastery of Rievaulx Abbey. It was
founded in 1132 and because of the difficulties presented by the terrain,
the Abbey was built in a somewhat unorthodox manner: instead of lying
from east to west, its central isle was laid in a north to south position.
The site was once occupied by a community of 140 monks and 600 lay people,
but today it’s owned by English Heritage, and provides the tourists with
the opportunity to sample the towering medieval architecture, and explore
the maze of ancillary buildings.
Rievaulx Abbey is featured on our 55-minute video Picture Postcard Yorkshire,
and can be purchased on line. Click here to
