South
from Beverley is the famous landmark, the Humber Bridge. For 17 years
it was the world’s longest single-span suspension bridge, and was officially
opened by Her Majesty the Queen in July 1981. It took nine years to build
and provided the link between two areas which had previously been separate
and distinct parts of the country.
It’s an impressive structure, spanning just over 1400 meters, with concrete
along weighing almost half-a-million tonnes. The fifty-millionth vehicle
passed over the bridge in September 1993; however, the bridge hasn’t managed
to pay for itself since opening.
The Humber Bridge is featured on our 55-minute video Picture Postcard
Yorkshire, and can be purchased on line. Click
