Steam
railways in Yorkshire have provided many a setting for television drama,
and it’s not surprising why. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway starts
its five-mile journey from Keighley to Oxenhope, stopping along the way
at the picturesque station at Haworth. Like the stations of the North
Yorkshire Moors Railway, the character of Haworth station has been well
preserved.
Haworth itself clings to the hillside. The steep cobbled street running
through the heart of the village provides many clues, if any were needed,
as to its popularity. The teashops and souvenir galleries are testament
to the Bronte sisters, who lived in the Parsonage at the top of the cobbled
street.
The Bronte novels are some of the most well known pieces of literature
in the English language. The moorland landscape around Haworth features
in the novels and one of the most popular locations is High Withens, a
moorland farm believed to be the original of ‘Wuthering Heights’. In the
Bronte’s time, not many households could afford sufficient heating, and
the water supply was polluted. In 1850, the average age of death was 25,
with nearly half the children dying before the age of six. It seems miraculous
that unlike their sisters, Emily, Charlotte and Anne survived long enough
to write the masterpieces which we can still enjoy today.
Haworth is featured on our 55-minute video Picture Postcard Yorkshire,
and can be purchased on line. Click here to
