The
elegant and refined town of Harrogate is well worth visiting if only to
see its beautiful flower displays. But the town’s fame and fortune have
rested, quite literally, on the rocks on which it is built. Springs percolate
from a great depth through carboniferous rocks, brining to the surface
the various minerals which have made the town a famous Spa, the first
in the country. Dozens of springs have been found here, and pump houses
and baths were built so that people could take the waters.
The Royal Baths were opened in 1897, though the pumps and the bath chairs
have long since gone. Harrogate is a Victorian and Edwardian town. These
were the times when the grand and spacious hotels were built for the many
visitors to the Spa.
It’s only on foot that you can really discover Harrogate’s many pleasures:
its wonderful architecture, cafes and restaurants, and of course its gardens
ablaze with flowers.
Harrogate is featured on our 55-minute video Picture Postcard Yorkshire,
and can be purchased on line. Click here to
