Another
of Yorkshire’s well-preserved Medieval castles is Castle Bolton. In 1568
Sir Francis Knollys called the Castle ‘the highest walled house I have
ever seen’. Work began on the castle in 1378 for the Scrope family, who
supported the house of York in the Wars of the Roses.
Much of the castle, with its mighty towers and rectangular courtyard,
survived orders to destroy famous Yorkshire castles issued by Parliament
in the Civil War.
