Bridlington
is as lively and popular as Scarborough
but with an atmosphere all of its own. It, too, has a bustling harbour
and miles of firm, golden sands which are the focal point of the summer
trade. The town has held onto the finest traditions of a seaside resort,
with donkey rides up and down the beach, a traditional seafront of souvenir
shops, fresh fish shops boasting some of the finest local catches, amusement
arcades and Victorian houses offering accommodation to the annual influx
of holidaymakers.
To celebrate this great British tradition, the Lord Ffoeffees of Bridlington,
a long-standing organisation of eminent townsfolk, whose quest is to support
and promote developments in the town, have been behind the UK's first
"hands on" museum celebrating the seaside holiday. Created by the same
award-winning team responsible for the hugely successful Grimsby Fishing
Heritage Centre, the Hartlepool Heritage Quay and the new James Herriot
centre in Thirsk, Beside the Seaside offers a glorious day-trip through
the century and a remarkable insight into the fishing, religious and tourist
heritage of the town.
