Bradford
is a city to have enjoyed a major revival - not only enjoying a reputation
as home to some of the finest curry houses in Britain, but also as the
City of Film. Billy Liar, Monty Python's Meaning of Life, A Private Function,
Where The Heart is, A Touch of Frost and Heartbeat have all been filmed,
to varying degrees, against the backdrop of this awakening city, which
is also home to the prestigious National Museum of Photography, Film and
Television, said to be the most visited tourist attraction outside London.
This, and the celebrated Alhambra Theatre, add to the cosmopolitan air
of a city whose history lies in its 19th century prowess as a textile
centre of world renown.
It was around the mid 1800s that Bradford also developed strong links
with Germany. Many of its textile export houses were founded by the Germans
and their community grew to such an extent that a New Germany was born
in the city, later to be reborn as a business development known as Little
Germany which is now a landscape of warehouses designed in the Italinatae
Palazzo style. Their design was considered to be controversial at the
time, but today one of the city's strengths lies in its wealth of old
and contemporary architecture sitting comfortably side-by-side.
From the splendour of the Cartwright Hall Art Gallery and the Gothic town
hall to the glass and chrome facade of the National Museum of Photography
and Waterstones book shop, to the slightly Eastern promise of the Alhambra's
landmark domed towers, the Bradford skyline is one of the most eclectic
in Yorkshire.
